It's a BIG day on the farm this Thursday......

We will begin to pick the VETERAN PEACHES on Thursday this week at Sauvie Island Farms.
The Veterans are a favorite for canning.
The Veterans are excellent canning peaches because they are so easy to work with. They are a freestone and come right off the pit, the skins also slip off very easily. This variety of peach does not get the rosy red skin color, so when picking you need to feel the peach at the stem area. If it is soft and comes off the tree easily, the peach is ripe. You will still see a greenish tint on the stem side of the peach. The Veterans are more sensitive to bruising than some of our other varieties, so we recommend that when you place them in your box, put them stem side down and try not to handle them more than necessary. Also if the peaches are not touching and bumping into each other, they should not bruise. Veterans are also great for fresh eating and freezing!

The Chester blackberries are ripening quickly in this hot weather. They are large, sweet, easy to pick, and plentiful. These blackberries do NOT have seeds, so they make great jam and pies...or just eat'em fresh! We tried some in lemonade the other day and it was just as good...or better than what you get at the local fast food restaurant. :)
We also have green beans, pickling cucumbers, zucchini, cabbage, an assortment of peppers, and SWEET CORN ready for you to pick this week.

today at the farm

I have always loved flowers.
For the past couple of years we have been expanding our
u cut flower garden, adding more varieties each year. With the cold, rainy spring of 2010, we wondered if we would ever have nice flowers in bloom for this season. All the annuals had a slow start and we had to replant over 2/3 of our dahlias that didn't make it thru the winter.
Today at the farm we had a group come out to pick flowers for a wedding. I think they did a great job finding beautiful, colorful flowers. I was pleasantly pleased that we had such a wide assortment for them! The flowers are so gorgeous all together in their containers, I just wanted to share them with you.

If you need a large quantity of flowers, we sell them by the bucket for only $15. Bring your own buckets, or we have those for sale also!
Today we picked the first of our SWEET CORN....finally. You will also find blueberries, chester blackberries and tree ripened sweet peaches for u-pick this week at the farm. Green beans, pickling cukes, zucchini, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, & peppers are also available.
Our tractor pulled wagon rides runs daily. Hope to see you soon at the farm!

opps....

I typed in the wrong link to Leigh Anne's blog on my previous post...and then it went out to all of you who receive our email updates.

Your Homebased Mom is where you will find Leigh Anne's great recipe and blog.

I AM SO SORRY that the emails went out with the wrong link...it was my first time trying to link something to the blog post. Hopefully I will learn and not embarrass myself so much next time. :/

The blogging world..and the farm

I have been following a blog, Your Homebased Mom, for over a year now. It is published by a creative local woman who has many delicious recipes, party ideas, and fun things to do in the Portland area. Since Leigh Anne has many great recipes I thought it would be fun to invite her out to the farm to pick peaches....and then see what she did with them. She is blogging about her visit to our farm at Homebased Portland and YourHomebased Mom . She has included a peach pie recipe, which we are going to try tomorrow. She used FRESH peaches, which I love...and actually prefer over cooked peaches. Check out her blogs...and leave her a comment to let her know how you found her. Oh...she added some great pictures from the farm to our facebook page. Find us on facebook ~ Sauvie Island Farms.
The RED HAVEN PEACHES are available to pick this week. These are beautiful tree ripened peaches perfect for freezing, canning or eating fresh! Our next peaches to ripen are the Hale-Haven and the Rosas. They should be ready to pick by mid week.
Chester Blackberries and Blueberries are available in abundance this week. There are a few 'end of the season' raspberries and the marions are done for this year. We have green beans, pickling cukes, green and yellow zucchini, lettuce, cabbage and few other veggies all for you to pick this week. U-cut flowers and herbs are also available!! Hope to see you soon on the farm...and if YOU blog about it ....let us know!! We love to hear from you.

August on the farm

It's the first week of August and the harvest is plentiful at
SAUVIE ISLAND FARMS.

Beautiful, sweet tree ripened RED HAVEN PEACHES are ready to be picked. The weather is perfect for peach picking, we keep our trees pruned low to the ground, so the picking is easy. There are plenty of peaches to be picked this week.

The peaches are just $1.50 per lb.-if you pick over 15 lbs the price drops to $1.25 per lb. AND if you pick over 50 lbs, the price drops to just $1.00 per lb!

There are still sweet RASPBERRIES for you to pick. There are not as many berries on the vine as there were earlier in the season, but the fruit is still sweet and easy to pick this week.

We also have an abundance of Blue Crop BLUEBERRIES, small quantities of MARIONBERRIES, and the beginnings of Chester BLACKBERRIES. All the berries are $1.75 per lb.

Veggies available this week are larger sized pickling cukes, green beans, zucchini, yellow summer squash, lettuce, & cabbage. Our sweet corn is still a couple of weeks away from being ready to pick.

Beautiful u-cut flowers-zinnias, dahlias, sunflowers, cosmos, and more this week at Sauvie Island Farms.
