This week on the farm

STRAWBERRIES !

Sauvie Island Farms has an abundance of strawberries for you to pick. The Hood, Honeoye, and Shuksan fields are loaded with beautiful, sweet and easy to pick strawberries. There couldn't be a better time to come out and pick some Oregon grown strawberries. Pick Your Own strawberries are just $1.50 per lb.

Our peonies are blooming and ready to be cut also! The peonies won't last much longer, so if you are looking for some early season fresh cut flowers....NOW is the time to get these beauties.

We have had a cool wet year so far, but our berries are loving this weather. The raspberries are still over a week away from being ripe and the blueberries will come quickly after that. The vines are loaded with berries, so once they start to ripen we will have an abundance of these also!

Help us spread the word that there are excellent strawberries to be picked at SAUVIE ISLAND FARMS.

Tomatoes???

This has been a challenging year on the farm, due mostly to the random weather changes. Many of the crops were planted later than usual, and are being harvested later than usual. On the farm right now, we have a great planting of green tomatoes. We keep watching them, hoping that they will start to turn red. Since it gets so cold at night, we really don't know if they will ever ripen. There are plenty of green tomatoes to be picked, so if you have any good recipes for green tomatoes, this is the year to use them!! One of our long time employees, Sherri, wants to share one of her favorite recipes with us today. She says that this a favorite of her husband. He puts it on everything. Really?...everything?...well, you get the picture. It's a good relish recipe! So if you want to try something new, and you are looking for an easy canning project this cool, rainy weekend, come out, pick some green tomatoes and give it a try. Then let us know if you like it!!

Green Tomato Relish:
1 peck of green tomatoes. (a peck is is equal to a 5 gallon bucket)
3 green peppers
3 red peppers
8 lg onions
Grind with food processor. Add 1/2 cup salt. Let stand overnight.
Next day: Put in cloth bag (or colander with tiny holes) Drain juice.
Place in pan and add 1 small bottle of horseradish, 2 T tumeric, one full can of whole spices (put in cloth and tie with rubber band), 6 cups sugar and 3 cups vinegar. Boil for 1 hour. (remove the spice bundle) Put in jars & seal while hot. Makes approx. 20 cups of relish.

We will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday~ 9am-7pm.
There are still a few Elberta peaches that need a few days to ripen, as well as, sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, zucchini and Chester Blackberries. Labor Day Weekend on the farm

Sauvie Island Farms will be open 9am-7pm on Saturday, September 4th & also Monday, September 6th. We are always closed on Sundays.

We have beautiful Chester blackberries for you to pick. These berries have become a favorite for many! They are easy to pick, no thorns on the vines, and the berries are sweet and seedless! The blackberries are just $1.75 per lb for u-pick. If you are looking for a good dessert recipe using blackberries, check this one out: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/08/the_great_cobbl/
We also have beautiful flowers blooming on the farm this first week of September!
The Honey Select and Bodacious Sweet Corn is also ready to pick. We have the end of the season green beans and pickling cucumbers, as well as zucchini, cabbage, cauliflower and an assortment of peppers.
Saturday we will have the orchard open for Elberta peaches. We do not have a lot of trees in this variety so they will most likely get picked out sometime on Saturday. This will be the end of the 2010 peach season when they are all gone.
