Berries...and Peaches

First, I must apologize for not posting an update here over the past few weeks. 

There are several ways to get our 'farm fresh ripe and ready' information.

We update our phone message line whenever we have something new to pick, or when we are finished with a crop.  It usually is updated twice a week. Call  503-621-3988.

This is what is ripe and ready at Sauvie Island Farms this week.

Red Raspberries- Tulameen, Saanich and Coho.  The quantities are not as heavy as they were a week or two ago, but there are still more to ripen and we will let you keep picking them as long as they are there.  The hot weather next week may do them in.

Yellow Raspberries- these are ripening nicely, and you can find a handful here and there.

Marionberries- Last week was the prime week for marions,  but like the raspberries there are more to ripen, there just aren't as many as there were at the beginning.  They won't last much longer either.

Blueberries-Blue Crop  Lots of sweet berries to be picked in the blueberry patch.  
The Liberty variety should be ready to pick next week.

All of the berries are $2.50 per lb. for u-pick

Veggies - Green beans, pickling cukes, slicing cukes, kale, cabbage, swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, leeks, spinach, lettuce.  Sweet corn is not ready yet, a couple more weeks.


Peaches-Red Haven.  We will open the orchard for the first picking on 
Friday, July 20th.  
For those of you who have been around and know that our first peach to ripen is the Early Red Haven, you may be wondering what is going on.  We had a frost this past winter when the Early Reds were blooming, this damaged the blossoms resulting in no fruit.  We also had some frost damage in the Red Havens, so there are some trees in the lower part of the orchard that do not have any peaches.  
We will have a small crop of Red Havens this year.  

We are opening the orchard now to get the ripest of the peaches picked.  Not all the peaches on every tree will be ready to pick.  If the peach does not want to come off the branch easily, it needs to be left to ripen a bit more.  If you do pick a firm peach, it will ripen up on your kitchen counter within a day or two.  
We will have the orchard open for picking on Friday and Saturday this week.  
Check our phone line on Monday morning if you can't come this week.. we may have to close for more to ripen.


Peaches prices:  1-10 lbs $2.00 lb ~ 11-30 lbs $1.50 lb ~ 31-49 $1.25 lb ~ 50+lbs $1.00 lb.
We offer a discount to the home canners who purchase larger quanities. 

One more thing...
We have been struggling for the past few years about what to do about those who like to have a
'peach picnic' in the orchard.  We request that you purchase the peaches before eating them.  It has become a big issue for us.  If you see others who are eating and not purchasing first, could you remind them nicely that they really should pay for the peaches before eating them.

Flowers- we have lots of flowers this week with more to come in the next couple of weeks.  The dahlias have started to bloom and a few of the sunflowers.
