Peach update

Rosa peaches
The peaches at Sauvie Island Farms are ripening and being picked as quickly as they ripen.  We harvested all of our Red Havens last week, in just 4 days.  In previous year, we have picked them for up to 2 weeks.
Friday July 31 is the first day for tree ripened Rosa peaches.  This peach has an excellent fresh eating flavor, freezes well, and is good for canning.

If you are waiting for the easy to work with and canning favorite, the Veterans, they could be ready to pick by the end of next week.  Last year we started picking the Veterans on August 14.  All of our peaches are ripening at least one week earlier than last year.  If you wait until the middle or end of August you will miss getting peaches at Sauvie Island Farms.  After the Veterans ripen,  we have a small number of Early Elberta and O'Henry trees.
For the most current orchard update it is best to call the farm line at 503-621-3988 or to check out our facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/sauvieislandfarms/

Berries this week:
Blue Crop blueberries are loaded with sweeet fruit ready to be picked.
Chester blackberries are ripening a bit, with many more to come.
Raspberries and Marionberries are at the end of the season.  You can still hunt around and find small quantities.

Veggies this week:
green beans, pickling cukes, kale, zucchini,
Sweet corn should be ready by the end of next week.

Flowers:  The sunflowers have started to bloom, there are many flowers blooming this week in the u-cut flower garden.  We have some beautiful basil ready to be picked also!

Just a reminder, please wear a mask when you are on the farm. We also ask that you do not bring your own containers, we will supply boxes for you to pick into.
We have lots of room here at the farm to maintain social distance, please keep a close watch over your children, and as always we ask that you do not eat the peaches while in the orchard.

We are open Monday- Saturday 8am-6pm.

Berries, Peaches, Veggies & Flowers

Did you say Peaches?  YES!

Red Haven Peaches at Sauvie Island Farms will open on

Wednesday, July 22.
This peach variety is excellent for fresh eating, freezing or canning and is a favorite of many.

When you enter our orchard this year, you will see some trees that do not have any peaches on them.  These trees had frost damage this spring when they were in bloom so no fruit formed.  The trees that do have peaches on them are loaded with beautiful fruit this year.

Not only did the frost do damage, but we have some critter damage in the orchard.  You will see large mounds of dirt and holes produced by the squirrels that love to reside in our orchard.  Watch your step while in the orchard.

You may also see some 'bites' out of some of the peaches, this is caused by the deer who are fond of our peaches.  Just leave that fruit alone, or if you want you can pick it and just leave it on the ground at the base of tree.  The unfortunate thing about these deer treats, is that the deer usually take one bite and do not finish off the peach.  It is frustrating for us.

The larger peach trees in our orchard are over 40 years old, you will see smaller and younger trees planted in between the larger trees.  Some of these have been producing great fruit for the past couple of years, as have our old trees.  Each year we wonder if this will be the last year for those older trees.  You will see some bare spots in the orchard where we cleared out some of these broken down older trees. While in the orchard please do not climb or pull on the branches, they will break if you do.

The Red Havens are the first variety that we have available this year.
Coming next will be Rosa, Hale-Haven,  Red Globe, Veteran, Early Elberta & O'Henry.  Last year we picked the last variety at the end of August.  This year is looking like similar timing.
