Red Haven Peaches

Peaches ripen quickly in 100+degree weather!

We have beautiful, sweet Red Haven Peaches ripe and ready to be picked at Sauvie Island Farms. They are just $1.50 per lb. If you pick over 15 lbs, the price drops to $1.25 per lb. AND if you pick over 50 lbs. the price is just $1.00 per lb. The Red Havens are very sweet, juicy and excellent for jams, pies, canning or fresh eating!! Nothing says summer like the sweet juice of a tree ripened peach dripping down your chin!! (we just ask that you pay for your peaches before you eat them;).....thanks!)

I couldn't resist getting a picture of this darling group of ladies who picked flowers for their friend's wedding. Great job and best wishes to the bride and groom!!

We will be open inspite of the heat-- 8am-7pm (closed sunday).

happy monday....

It's going to be a hot weather week on the farm.

Sauvie Island Farms will be open and we have a great assortment of fruits and veggies for you to pick. The Early Red Haven peaches are still available this first part of this week. With the heat we are getting, the Red Havens are close to harvest, and we should be able to start picking them as soon as the Early Reds are picked out.
Raspberries and Marionberries don't like the heat, so the ripe ones need picking soon. There are more to ripen, but they will not be a plentiful as earlier on. Blueberries are sweet and easy to pick this week. Blueberries are so easy to freeze, and there are so many ways to eat them. We tried a new blueberry muffin recipe this weekend. They was delicious. Here's the recipe:
Blueberry Buckle Muffins
1/2 cup butter, divided
1 cup sugar, divided
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cup flour, divided
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups blueberries
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
In bowl, cream 1/4 cup softer butter and 3/4 cup sugar. Add eggs & vanilla, mix will. Combine 2 cups flour, baking powder & salt: add to eggs alternately with buttermilk. Mix well. Toss berries in 1/4 cup flour: fold into batter. Pour into muffin cups. For topping, combine 1/4 cup flour, brown sugar, 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon & 1/4 cup cold butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkly over batter. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes. 12 servings.

The veggies for you to pick at Sauvie Island Farms are plentiful this week also. If you have a cool place to work, you might want to try some pickling. The cucumbers are the perfect size for pickles, and we have fresh dill for you to cut!

The green beans are young and tender, slicing cukes, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are ready to you to pick!! Our flowers are blooming and ready to be cut. Even thought it's going to be a hot week, we have a lot available for you to pick this week...hope to see you soon on the farm.

First PEACH of the season....

Our first peaches are ripe at
Sauvie Island Farms.

We will open the orchard for you to pick the EARLY RED HAVEN PEACHES on Wednesday, July 22.

This peach has a very sweet flavor, perfect for getting your first taste of a tree ripened peach this season. We only have these for u-pick at $1.50 per lb. Once the ripe peaches are picked we may need to take a couple of days break for the rest to ripen. The Red Haven variety should be ready to pick right around the first of August. This week we still have beautiful raspberries, blueberries and marionberries. Also, pick your own green beans, pickling and slicing cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower. The u-cut flowers are blooming and gorgeous!! Hope to see you soon on the farm.

it's a BERRY good week.....

and an assortment of colorful flowers.

employee of the week-month-year-decade!!

This is CINDY. She doesn't like to have her picture taken, but she does like to smile and talk to the customers at Sauvie Island Farms. If you have visited our farm in the past 15 plus years, you have probably talked to Cindy, but you may not know her name...or even who she is. So we thought we would like to introduce you to her. Cindy is a REAL farmer's daughter. (the farmer's wife has only had the 'farmer' label attached to her since marriage.) Cindy's dad is the original owner of Sauvie Island Farms.
Now the farm is owned by Cindy's brother. So she is also a farmer's sister!!...and sister-in-law. You may not have realized this, because Cindy loves the farm and works so might have thought she had ownership in it. Cindy started working in the u-pick fields when she was in elementary school. She left the farm for a while...went to college, got married, had 5 kids...and eventually found her way back to her roots and what she loves. She loves to talk and assist our customers in finding their way to the best spot to pick berries or peaches. She is also an excellent cook. Today we are sharing a couple of her recipes with you. When asked what her favorite berry is, she says that she likes 'em all. For fresh eating, she likes strawberries, for smoothies and jam she prefers raspberries, and for pie baking she makes a perfect marionberry pie. This is the recipe that she uses to make any kind of berry pie:

Berry Pie:
pastry for two crust pie
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon, if desired
5 cups fresh berries
1 T. lemon juice
2 T butter or margarine
Heat oven to 425. Prepare pastry. Stir together sugar, flour and cinnamon.
Mix with berries. Turn into pastry lined pie pan, sprinkle with lemon juice and dot with butter. Cover with top crust, which has slits cut in it, seal and flute edges. Cover edge with 2-3 inch strip of aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning. Remove foil last 15 minutes of baking. Bake 35-45 minutes until juice begins to bubble through slits in crust.

Another exellent recipe that Cindy's relatives request for christmas gifts!!
Marionberry Syrup:
1 1/4 cups berry juice
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup corn syrup
1 T lemon juice
Combine all ingredients in large, heavy kettle. Bring to a rolling boil and boil for 1 minute after the mixture comes to a boil that cannot be stirred down. Remove from heat and skim off any foam. Pour into clean, hot 1/2 pint or pint canning jars. Adjust lids according to the manufacture's directions.......This syrup can be 'canned' or you can freeze it without doing the hot water bath process. If you want to can: Place jars in hot water bath. Be sure the level of the water covers the top of the jars by at least one inch. Bring to a boil and process for 10 minutes. Remove from the water bath and cool. Check to see that the jars are sealed. Label and store on a cool, dark shelf. Once the syrup jar is opened, store in refrigerator. This syrup is so good on pancakes, waffles, crepes, ice cream...!!

more berries...MARIONBERRIES!!

We have beautiful, sweet MARIONBERRIES for you to pick starting Friday, July 1oth for just $1.75 per lb. Our marionberries had some freeze damage from the harsh winter we had this past year, so we do not expect to have a long season. Come out as soon as you can to get your marionberries. If you miss out, it looks like we will have a great crop of Chester blackberries in the near future!!

The LAVENDER is ready for you to cut.

Lavender is a beautiful herb, that looks and smells great in a vase on your table...but there are also so many other uses...and it is also used in recipes!! We sell lavender and other herbs by the 'bundle'. Basically whatever you can grasp between your thumb and $2.oo.
Also raspberries, blueberries, lettuce, green beans, dahlias, sunflowers, cilantro, and other flowers are ready for you to pick!! Hope to see you soon on the farm.

Hello from the Farmer's Daughter!

Since my mom asked me if I would like to update the blog today, and I willingly agreed, here is the update for you all!

CHERRIES and STRAWBERRIES are now finished for the season.

However, GREENBEANS, DAHLIAS, and SUNFLOWERS are now in season!

Our fresh green beans are $2 per lb.

Sunflowers and Dahlias are $.50 each.

Oh, and did I mention that the raspberries and blueberries are now LOADED out in the fields? Well, they are! The nice cool weather we have been having this week is PERFECT for picking these delicious berries! Come on out!

Fourth of July

Sauvie Island Farms will be open on July 4th from 8am-5pm. We are closing a little early, so our employees can enjoy the evening with their families and friends. Our tractor pulled wagon ride will be running all day to take you back and forth to the RASPBERRIES and BLUEBERRIES. There is no charge for the ride!!
Both of these berries are sweet and ready to be picked. They are just $1.75 per lb. If you pick 10 lbs or more, the price drops to $1.50 per lb. You can get your red and blue from these berries...and if you are looking for white, we have some beautiful shasta daisies blooming right now!! Some of the dahlias have started to bloom and we have lettuce, snow peas, lavender, cilantro and dill also! Hope to see you soon on the farm. Have a great holiday weekend!
