It's a bumper crop in the peach orchard!

We have an abundance of tree ripened peaches at Sauvie Island Farms this year.
Due to the warm spring, the peach buds just popped out
and have grown into beautiful sweet fruit.
The Red Haven Peaches are ready to be picked, and are enjoying the cooler weather today.
With warmer weather coming our way again next week,
these peaches will fall off the trees if they are not picked soon.

Our trees are suffering a bit from the weight of the
large crop this year.  The peach orchard is 38 years old, which is
ancient for fruit trees. We have many broken
branches due to the large amount of fruit.

The peaches are sweet and juicy in spite of the condition of the trees.

Peaches are easy to freeze, make great preserves and pies!
This is what the farmer and I had for lunch today.
Cindy, our faithful 'u-pick lady' brought us a peach pie today.
She also made one for the kids that help at our farm!

This is the easy delicious recipe:
Peach Pie
4-5 cups peaches
9 inch unbaked pie crust
1 cup sugar
1/3 c margarine
1/3 cup flour
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Line a 9 inch pie plate with an unbaked pie crust.

Cream 1 cup sugar with margarine.
Add flour, a beaten egg and vanilla.

Peel and slice peaches.  Because the peaches discolor if
not covered at once,
have mixture ready to spread over the peaches the minute
they are put in the crust.

Fill pie crust with peaches.
Spread mixture over sliced peaches.

Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour.

Sauvie Island Farms is open Monday-Saturday 8am-7pm.

We also have blueberries, chester blackberries,
sweet corn, pickling cukes, dill, green beans, zucchini, kale, spinach, lettuce,
cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and sweet corn for you to pick this week.
Also beautiful sunflowers, dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, larkspur and more!

We are located 3 1/2 miles from the bridge on Sauvie Island Road
At the 2 mile marker, the road divides, stay to the left and continue on
for another mile and half.  We are on the right hand side of the road!
